[FOUNDERS SERIES] Mothers Advocacy Project

Today on 7 Figure Fundraising, host Trevor Bragdon interviews Chelsea Sabo, the founder and Executive Director of the Mothers Advocacy Project. Chelsea is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and with the notable exception of her time as a student of Samford University, she has spent her life immersed in the community of Atlanta. She later became a foster parent and an adoptive single mother. Along the way, though, Chelsea found that she wanted to help the whole family rather than only children, and more specifically, she developed a passion to help other moms overcome life’s challenges and keep their families together and out of foster care.

For years, Chelsea had advised other organizations engaged with the foster care system, but as a foster parent with many questions and a burden to fix the problem of many children ending up in foster care over solvable issues, she found herself discontent with a mere support role. After the idea to start a nonprofit formed, she sold her home and lived on the money to spend a year researching best practices. Chelsea gathered advice from a wide variety of people, sought out critique, built a support base, and planned for all eventualities before formally opening a location for her organization.

While the intervention-based organization experienced an early shut down, Chelsea and her team stayed afloat by shifting their game plan. The Mothers Advocacy Project began with a group trauma intervention program (including a martial arts component), adding more phases to keep care in-house, and even piloting child trauma therapy. Thus far, the organization has built a great track record of family preservation, strong relationship with donors, and a great community of support.
