Show Notes
To start, Trevor asks how Joel about leading with love, the idea behind his book. Joel shares this philosophy of leading with love, which is an action rather than a feeling. At Herschend Enterprises, they built performance goals around the seven principles of leading with love and, as a result, saw increased employee engagement. He then breaks down the goals of his business into Do goals and Be goals. Do goals are what you have to get done every day; Be goals are how you go about doing it. All of his Be goals, such as patience, truthfulness, and kindness, have behaviors attached to them.
In his book, Joel writes about leading through several crises, including both the financial crash of 2008 and a corporate emergency while he was at Sea World. Joel shares that you cannot offer certainty to your staff when you're in a crisis, but you can provide clarity. Joel also stresses the importance of leaders taking care of their personal health throughout stressful times. He says if he could do one thing differently during this time, it would be, in all instances, to lead with truth.
